Austin’s Tennessee Firearms offers Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit courses on Saturdays and Sundays (see schedule below), we also offer the option of scheduling classes on other dates on request for special groups.

The Department of Safety’s online registration program speeds up the receipt of your Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit. It automates the process and even allows you to track the progress of your application yourself. The steps are simple and outlined below.

  1. Go online to the Department of Safety’s secure website at https://dl.safety.tn.gov/_/#1 , fill out the application, hit the “Submit” button and print out or record the confirmation number of the transaction.
  2. Contact the school via email at info@firearmsclasses.com providing the APPLICATION NUMBER you received when you submitted your online registration at the Department of Safety’s registration webpage AND your contact information, i.e. your name, home address, email addressphone number .

It’s as easy as 1, 2 … er, ah… well, easy as pie!

Special Note:

The Tennessee Department of Safety’s Handgun Carry Permit class is not a beginner’s class. It is performance based and you must be able to shoot accurately to pass the course. If you are a beginning or novice shooter it is strongly recommended that you take our Introduction to the Handgun class. Introduction to the Handgun is our school’s response to the public’s need for a firearm introductory program for beginning or novice shooters and/or new gun buyers. This class provides a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper operation including the most advanced shooting techniques of a specific model of firearm, whether one owned by the student or one supplied by the instructor. To not only improve retention, but also to make learning fun, these courses reflect the TPI (Total Participant Involvement) philosophy of “learning by doing”. Public Chapter No 866, signed May 18, 2014 section 2 states-

Any person, who has been honorably discharged from any branch of the United States armed forces or who is on active duty in any branch of the armed forces or who is currently serving in the national guard or armed forces reserve, and who makes initial application for a handgun carry permit shall be required to pay only that portion of the initial application fee that is necessary to conduct the required criminal history record check.

That being said, someone out of service would need a DD214, someone still serving would have their current credential card identify them. This does not change the fact that they will still need to show proof of completion of an 8 hour handgun safety course or meet the exemption requirements. The current fee to run  background checks is $68 so that is what the applicant must pay.
