An Orlando Observation

ATFS_ASFirst of all I want to offer my prayers up for all those affected by the terrible tragedy at Pulse in Orlando, Florida this past weekend. Secondly I want to offer my sincerest condolences to the families of all those lost and all the individuals involved with or affected by that cowardly terrorist attack that took the lives of 49 innocent people.

In all the news reports and intelligence reports that I have read I am astounded by one thing in particular. Not one of the eye-witness interviews or reports says anything about anyone in that killing zone fighting back against the gunman! So far as of this writing 4 days after the event, there is absolutely no evidence that anyone attempted to overpower the gunman and stop the killing. Never mind that this location is a “Gun Free Zone” and though Florida law allows for carry permit holders to carry handguns into places that sell alcohol by the drink this business chose not to allow anyone to carry in the club which is certainly the club’s right to do.

I train businesses and educational facilities in dealing with an Active Shooter or more appropriately, an Active Killer and the central point that I or anyone else that provides this kind of training stresses to clients is that you have three options in attempting to survive an attack like this. One can flee the attacker, hide from the attacker or as a last resort, fight the attacker.

The terrorist, Omar Mateen launched his Active Shooter attack about 2:00 AM and transitioned shortly thereafter into what is known as a Barricaded Hostage Taker event. Since the Columbine event law enforcement has necessarily changed it’s tactics from calling out SWAT to contain the area and set up negotiations to immediately challenging the shooter who is actively killing people but if the shooter stops and barricades up then law enforcement sets up the SWAT team, contains the situation and attempts to open negotiations with the hostage taker. At this point law enforcement is ready to assault the shooter/hostage taker in the event that things sour. This appears to be just what happened in Orlando last Sunday morning. The police attempted to deal with the shooter for 3 hrs.

At the same time, during that 3 hour period Mateen spent what has been described as a “considerable amount of time” texting his wife and using his phone to make phone calls, go on-line searching for information on the shooting, and updating his Facebook page with pro-ISIS posts.

Now, in all that time, though he must have had his back turned towards someone at some point or must have been distracted by his documented phone activity no one ever had the thought of assaulting their assailant? What?  Keep in mind that there were approximately 250 patrons in the club but not even one person out of the two hundred and fifty picked up a chair, bottle or table and tried to attack the shooter! What would anyone have had to lose? What would he do? Attempt to shoot them? Heck, he did that anyway. There are even reports of him shooting victims over and over again as they lay dying on the floor. I am truly baffled by that.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind if you are ever caught in an Active Shooter event or Barricaded Hostage Taker event- you have three options; flee, hide or fight. Let’s look at those options.

  1. FLEE- At any time during the event, if you can get out then GET OUT! Don’t stop to take anything with you such as a purse, laptop or brief case. Help others escape if they will go with you but if they will not cooperate due to the fact that they are frozen in fear, leave them. Once you are safe, try to stop others from unknowingly moving into the deadly situation you just escaped from.

Once you are out of danger call 911 as soon as you safely can. Stay on the phone with the 911 operator providing what information you can until the operator releases you from the call. Tell the operator only what you know for a fact, not what you guess or suspect. This will provide the best information for the responding law enforcement officers, medical and fire personnel.

  1. HIDE- If you have no means of escape, hide somewhere out of the shooter’s view. Lock the doors between you and the attacker. Whether the doors have locks or not barricade the doors with anything heavy you can find like desks or filing cabinets and book cases. Get behind heavy furniture such as desks or file cabinets. Be absolutely quiet. Turn off your cell phone unless you have an open line to a 911 operator. Advise others that may be hidden away with you to do the same. If a cell phone were to ring or even vibrate against a solid object like a desk it could tip the shooter off that you are behind that locked door.
  2. FIGHT- If you cannot escape or effectively hide due to time or location relative to the shooter or if the shooter should break into your hiding place, then your only other option is to FIGHT! After all, what else are you going to do, stand there still as a target stand? What have you got to lose? Attempt to distract and disable the shooter. Get mad and defend yourself!

If you have a firearm, then use it. This shooter is not human. The shooter is not someone’s son, husband, brother or father. This is a killer that is intent on depriving your family of your love and protection. Consider the shooter as  nothing more than a target.

What no firearm? Your world is full of improvised weapons. Use a chair, table, book, phone set, or ink pen. A tightly rolled up magazine makes an effective impact weapon with a thrust into the solar plexus area of the torso or the eye. How about a heavy vase, fire extinguisher, scissors, a letter opener, coffee pot with or without hot coffee. Soda or juice cans. Your umbrella makes for a good “shooter-ka-bob”. Use an aerosol can of hair spray or bug spray to blind and distract your assailant. Hiding in the bathroom?  Grab a lid off a toilet tank, a section of pipe ripped out from under a sink or a towel dispenser off the wall. Its your life. Get creative.

Flee, hide or fight. I am just absolutely baffled as to why there is no evidence that anyone tried to fight.  Don’t be a “sheeple.” Don’t just stand there and be a bullet sponge. Do something! While there are no guarantees in life you can use your head to increase your chances of survival.

Hawaii is left of California- Not Just Geographically

OK, let me start out by saying that when it comes to gun control laws Hawaii, as a state has some of the most restrictive and draconian firearms and ammunition control laws in the nation. For instance, acquiring any firearm whether by purchase, gift or inheritance within the State requires a permit from your county chief of police. By the way, during this process you are also required to authorize release of your medical history and give the name and address of your doctor. Then there’s the fact that Hawaii is a “may issue” state. In Hawaii’s case “may issue” should be read as ‘probably won’t.’ You see, although allowed by law in “special circumstances of threat to self or property”, the county chiefs’ policy at present is to grant carry permits only to law enforcement and those military and security guards whose duties specifically require such.  Private citizens are generally denied. One should also note that in the firearms statutes of the Aloha State, the word “firearm” is often followed by the words “and ammunition”. Thus, ammunition, even in the absence of a firearm, is subject to the same restrictions as firearms in terms of transport and places to keep and carry.

To put it succinctly, Hawaii is not very 2A compliant. Even less so than their nearest neighbor state to the East, California. I guess they figured that since they were half way to China they would pick and choose which portions of the US Constitution they chose to adhere to.

Now according to a recent article in the Chicago Tribune, Hawaii intends to place all gun owners on a national database. The article may be found at the following URL:

This of course amounts to gun registration which is clearly the first step down the slippery slope of gun control right into the jaws of prohibition and confiscation. “Oh no”. “That’s preposterous” you say. This is America and though we want “more responsible gun control laws” for the safety of our citizenry, especially the children, we wouldn’t remove all guns from the law abiding citizens in the US. Ah but Sir Winston Churchill, borrowing an aphorism from George Santayana the noted American philosopher who wrote The Life of Reason, (1905) said “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. I submit the following as proof:

  • In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • China established gun control in 1935 by the Nationalists. From 1948 to 1952 under Mao’s Communist regime, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
  • Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, under the Pol Pot regime, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
  • Uganda established gun control in 1970 under Idi Amin. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

-and the list goes on and on with such notorious characters as Stalin (Soviet Union), Castro (Republic of Cuba), Qaddafi (Kingdom of Libya) , Kim Jong Il (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea), …

Now in this election season Hillary Clinton calls for “new ideas to keep guns from dangerous people” and along comes a Hawaiian legislator, Sen. Will Espero, who introduced a bill that would require all gun owners in the island state to be entered into an FBI database called Rap Back which would automatically notify police if an island resident is arrested anywhere else in the country. Hawaii could be the first state to add gun owners to the Rap Back system. According to a statement issued by the Honolulu Police Department, Hawaii “could serve as a model for other states if it becomes the first to enact the law.”

The Rap (Retained Applicant fingerPrint) Back database system is a program administered by the FBI that provides continuous criminal record monitoring service used to obtain criminal records checks and satisfy post-employment background check requirements for governmental agencies as well as private institutions and businesses. Traditional background checks provide only a ‘snapshot’ of a person’s criminal history. The key word here is “history”. States, agencies and institutions with individuals enrolled in the Rap Back Program will receive notifications of any subsequent criminal history. The program, set up by the USDOJ in their Criminal Justice Data Improvement Program began in 2007 and helps to protect the public from convicted criminals remaining in positions of trust (e.g. school teachers, foster parents, law enforcement officers or even elected officials) by providing continual monitoring of an enrolled employee’s arrest and/or conviction history.

It was Martin Niemöller (1892 – 1984) the Protestant pastor and German social activist who wrote “When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn’t a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.”

Speak out America while there is still someone left to speak out.

Apparently Some Folks Just Happen to Experience the “Bad Ju Ju” When Associating With Particular People.

It’s old news but considering that Mrs. Clinton is running for the Presidency of these United States I believe that this information needs to be considered. So here, is a short list from the “Lest We Forget What Has Happened to the Many ‘Associates’ of the Clintons” file. Well, Okay it’s a really, really long list.
1- James McDougal – Clintons convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr’s investigation.

8- Jerry Parks – Head of Clinton’s gubernatorial security team in Little Rock .. Gunned down in his car at a deserted intersection outside Little Rock Park’s son said his father was building a dossier on Clinton He allegedly threatened to reveal this information. After he died the files were mysteriously removed from his house.

46- Todd McKeehan– died in the assault on the Branch Davidian Compound ordered by J. Reno

All of the individuals on the bodyguards and pilots/aviators list immediately above died within 37 days of each other. Just another coincidence I suppose.
Quite an impressive list, eh?

Now, I’m not saying conclusively that the Clintons ordered the deaths of all these people. The only thing that I can say conclusively is that the Clintons moved in the same circles as some awfully depressed people, considering the huge number of suicides and a bunch of air travelers and apparent sleep walkers with the worst luck of any group of contacts I have ever seen, read about or heard of.

Yes, the Snopes folks declare this list patently FALSE in their article located at http://www.snopes.com/politics/clintons/bodycount.asp but after reading that article I find that there are a lot of open-ended and unresolved issues that they themselves point out. A number of these people are connected to William Jefferson through Hillary Rodham.

I’m just reporting. You decide.

We Report- You Decide

The 1911s Are Coming, The 1911s Are Coming- Hopefully!

US Army 1911

Next year you may be able to pick up a great buy on a government owned 1911.  You see, an amendment to the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act may soon allow the Civilian Marksmanship Program to publicly sell the Army’s massive (100,000) 1911 stockpile. Well, that is, if the Community Organizer-in-Chief doesn’t try to block it with some kind of executive order.

An amendment put forth by Representative Mike Rogers of Alabama was passed by the House Armed Service Committee, which means that all these World War II era handguns could be passed off to the CMP to be sold to anyone who can legally buy a handgun that is willing to pay for a piece of history. Since I already own the long gun companions to these fine examples of the combat handgun, being several M1 Garands and M1 Carbines I’d jump at the chance to add one or two of these WWII 1911 specimens to my collection of 1911’s.

Rep. Rogers said, “As a gun owner and strong believer in the Second Amendment, my proposal is a commonsense approach to eliminating an unnecessary cost to the Federal government while allowing the very capable CMP to handle the sale of these vintage firearms that otherwise would just sit in storage.”

“Not only is this (the CMP) an organization that is committed to training civilians in the proper, responsible, and safe use of firearms, but at a cost of roughly $2.00 per pistol per year to store these weapons, we were spending $200,00 a year in perpetuity,” said Rep. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma, who voted for the successful amendment. Rep. Russell went on to say“This sensible change will save the taxpayers millions over the years to come, as well as aid a great organization that serves the public.”

It looks like the National Defense Authorization Act will most likely come to the House floor for a vote this next May so keep your fingers crossed and contact your Congressman.

Go Forth and Make Yourself Lucky

Normal folks see the violent criminal offender as an aberration or abnormality of society.  The violent criminal offender on the other hand has a different mindset, a different sense of self than we “normal” people do. To them, violence is just a means to an end. Maybe he or she does what they do for money or drugs or power or maybe they’ll tell you it’s just their nature. No matter how you slice it the violence they perpetrate is simply a tool they will use to accomplish a task. To normal people a key is simply a tool we use to open a door so that we may get what we want from the other side. To the violent criminal the use of violence is just as natural as turning a key is to us. It’s just a means of getting what they want.

People who train and participate in “combative sports,” martial arts, or even gun games such as International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) first must learn the rules. Rules like no hitting below the belt, when your opponent “taps out” the match is over, or if you don’t take the targets in tactical order on the range you will be penalized by a deduction of points. The violent criminal offender has only one rule: to succeed at any cost. For him or her it’s an all or nothing thing. For that violent predator causing personal injury or death it is simply a means to an end, the cost of doing business.

To the sports competitor, it’s about winning within the rules. That’s often a difficult thing to do. It takes discipline and hard work. Competitors, as good at what they do as they may be, are nothing more than gamers. Play today and win or lose, play tomorrow. The psychopath plays for keeps.

Consider the folks in the middle and near east that are on the ground battling the fanatic jihadists of the Islamic State. They must fight to the end where they either win the fight or they are killed. There is no surrendering to be taken prisoner to be held humanely until the end of the conflict. The Islamic State psychopaths give no quarter. They kill their captures. It’s all or nothing.

When you find yourself involved in a lethal confrontation with no way out, you must give your best and your best had better be better than that of your opponent for your sake and the sake of your loved ones. So what is the implication for us as individuals who choose to defend ourselves? It means we must train. Not just take some class so that we can legally carry a gun amongst our fellow citizens and hope we’ll get lucky enough to survive unscathed either physically, financially or emotionally. Dumb luck is a coin toss. Real luck is when inspiration meets perspiration. Something has inspired you to take a carry permit class. Now get out and do what it takes to build defensive skills and hone them to a finer edge so it’s not dumb luck you rely on when confronted by a violent individual that intends to take something from you at any cost. As Stephen Leacock, one of history’s greatest economists and political theorists once said, “I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it”.

Please, go forth and make yourself lucky!

The United States Navy is bringing charges against Lt. Cmdr Timothy White for illegally discharging a firearm on federal property.- Well, May be Not

The United States Navy is bringing charges against Lt. Cmdr Timothy White for illegally discharging a firearm on federal property.

This was the headline of an article appearing (briefly) in the Navy Times.

What kind of DUMB ASS IDIOTS are in charge of our Armed Forces or as Col. Alan West said — “…pardon me, our “unArmed Forces”? Would they have preferred that Abdulazeez kill ALL the Marines and Sailors at the Naval Support Reserve Center? LTC White was wounded and shot Abdulazeez driving him back out of the building to the parking lot where arriving police confronted him. Col. West went on to say, “let me draw an interesting contrast: Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus is more concerned about lifting the ban on transgendered Sailors. Mabus has a problem in that for the first time since 2007 the US Navy will not have a Carrier Battle Group operating in the Persian Gulf. But this knucklehead (he’s speaking of SECNAV Ray Mabus here) has no problem with the Navy seeking to destroy the career of a Sailor, a commander of an installation, returning fire against an Islamic jihadist attack. I do not care if it was his personal weapon, he deserves a medal for facing the enemy.”

I absolutely concur!!!

Now it seems that the Navy is vowing that charges against LTC White were not being sought. This is absolutely contrary to a report appearing earlier today in the Navy Times, the branch’s newspaper. I went to the Navy Times to check the article again and found that it had been removed. No explanation, just removed.

Is the Navy now rearranging deck chairs on this voyage? Rather than simply wiping the article from the Navy Times they should have run a second article saying something like “after careful consideration of all facts in this case even the most liberal of boot-licking Obama supporters in the Admiralty or the SECNAV’s office could not support the weight of the soup sandwich they were asking the officers and sailors of the Navy as well as the American public to bear for consumption.” Yeah well that ain’t going to happen. Somebody’s gotta provide funding for the Navy Times and allow access to most areas of the Navy so that they can continue to write stories to keep the men and women of the Navy informed. A little pressure on the funding and access tap will make you wipe articles that are deemed unpopular by those up the chain.

Unfortunately LTC White’s career is in the dumper which is a real shame. Lt Col West was right when he said they ought to pin a medle on him for engaging the enemy. I think they ought to invite him to the White House and pin a medal on him. Surly they could find the time to do that while changing the light bulbs that put the LGBT colors on MY DAMNED WHITE HOUSE!!

Great to Be Back and What a Class We Had

There has been an unusually long time since I have posted anything here in the Blog due to the fact that I lost control of our web site because GoDaddy and I had a disagreement over my identity and they would not allow me to log on to renew my domain registration. After sending many, many emails (you can’t talk to a human there) with pages and pages of documentation and then finally threatening to flame them all over the internet as well as sue the pants off them if I lost my domain name they allowed me to access my account so I could renew my domain registration.

It is truly Great to Be Back!

We conducted an NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home pistol course Saturday the 20th and Sunday the  21st and what a course it was. We worked in the classroom Saturday until about 1:45 pm and moved to the firing range at the Windrock Range in Oliver Springs. There we worked on the student’s 5 step draw strokes and shot training exercises all afternoon long. The students kept saying over and over how much fun they had and how much they learned about using a firearm to defend themselves. That was just day one however. The big range day was to come on Sunday (today) We got started about noon and worked all afternoon until about 5:30 working on techniques such as moving and shooting, shooting around barricades, from both standing and kneeling positions, turning 90degrees and shooting, turning 180degrees and shooting as well as many other important defensive shooting techniques.

Yes it was hotter than the hubs of hell but everyone, students and instructors alike had a grand time.
